Leading canoeist visits Hinckley

ONE of the country's leading young canoeists visited Hinckley to help inspire those taking part in the Paddle for Life Sportivate programme being held at Hinckley Water Activities Training Centre.

Slalom canoeist Natalie Wilson, who has won two silver team medals at the Junior European Championships and gold in the team event at the Junior World Championships, was able to tell the young people what it is like to be an elite athlete competing at international standard in the sport.

The eight week programme also gave young people aged from 14 to 25 years the opportunity to try out a variety of paddle sports. Not only did they learn how to paddle canoes and kayaks for fun, but were also introduced to Olympic 2012 disciplines such as marathon and slalom.

They also achieved the British Canoe Union 1 Star Award on completion of the course.

The two hour sessions were funded by Sport England's Olympic Legacy programme Sportivate, which targets 14 to 25 year olds who aren't currently taking part in sport and gives them the opportunity to join a sports club and continue in the sport at the end of the eight week programme.

The programme was very successful and activity leader of the Paddle for Life programme Steve Burrows said:

"The Sportivate programme was a wonderful opportunity to work with a group of positive and motivated young people."

Councillor David Cope, Executive Member responsible for Culture and Leisure, said:

"Sportivate's funding of this programme and the overall profile created by the Olympics have created a very positive and exciting scenario where young people, who might not ordinarily involve themselves in water sports, a real chance to experience these activities. Everyone's a winner in this programme, enjoying the sport and then the opportunity to join organised clubs, quite an achievement".

Due to the success of the programme the next Sportivate Paddle for Life eight week course will begin on Tuesday 4 September, from 6pm to 8pm. The cost per person for the eight week course is £25.
