Importance of strength and resistance exercise

Strength and resistance training is very often neglected as part of the physical activity guidance. However, it has many important benefits to overall health and wellbeing:

Why is strength and resistance exercise important?

  • decreases risk of heart disease by lowering body fat
  • decreases blood pressure and improving cholesterol
  • lowers the stress placed on the heart whilst lifting a particular load
  • improved muscular fitness and makes everyday tasks much easier
  • reduce occurrence of sarcopenia (the age-related decline in muscle mass)
  • decreases risk of osteoporosis due to weight bearing nature (although all exercise helps with this, resistance exercise is proven to be the most beneficial)
  • main way to build and 'tone' your muscles to alter body shape
